Gifts to Center for Civic Engagement contribute to...
Since 2007, the Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) has worked to improve the community through engagement. We strive to do this in three ways:
- develop undergraduate agency as civic participants
- inform the campus and community about important issues
- strengthen the Long Island community and democracy through deliberative dialogue.
CCE has organized dozens of on-campus events, including forums, conferences, debates, workshops, exhibitions, cultural gatherings, and performances around several important themes including nonviolence, social justice, sustainability, the democratic process, and globalization. The Center plays an important role off-campus by supporting positive transformative changes on Long Island through its strategic community partnerships.
The goal of this campaign is to help the Center for Civic Engagement further fund our deliberative dialogue efforts by creating a perpetual scholarship, the CCE Democracy Fellow, that will fund at least one dedicated democracy fellow.
Deliberative dialogue is a unique approach to having community members discuss public issues. Instead of debating, they discuss policy options, consider the positives and negatives, and work to find common ground. This process places quality solutions and community-building above winning debates. In previous years, and only with the generous support of benefactors like you, we have recruited and trained undergraduate democracy fellows. In 2012, with the help of our democracy fellows, we were able to organize and host a total of 112 deliberative dialogues across Long Island.
Democracy fellows were trained to facilitate deliberative dialogues on and off campus. On campus, they host dialogues in Hofstra classrooms as well as host dialogues with adult community members and nearby elementary, middle, and high school students. Off-campus, they facilitate dialogues at libraries and schools. As you can imagine, organizing and hosting such events are both very resource and time-consuming, which is why your support is so crucial.
To date, CCE has received $8000 in generous contributions to help fund the CCE Democracy Fellow. We are in need of $17,000 in order to make this a perpetuating fund. Please make a gift and help us reach our goal!
