About

The Legal Hand Call-In Center of Nassau and Suffolk Counties, an initiative operated by the Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University, was launched in 2021. The Center serves a critical access point for residents of Long Island seeking legal information, access to justice, resources and referrals for a wide range of legal and social service issues as well as assistance with understanding Court proceedings and filling out Court Forms.

The mission of the Center is to ensure that individuals navigating these systems without legal representation have access to clear, accurate, and actionable information so they can make informed decisions and take meaningful next steps toward resolving their concerns.

Overview of Services:

  • We provide free legal information, resources, referrals, and assistance with completing certain court forms to Nassau and Suffolk County residents, as well as to anyone with matters in Nassau or Suffolk County courts or the Department of Social Services.
    • Our goal is to assist our Visitors with information to get them closer to a solution on matters including:
    • Housing: evictions (both Tenant and Landlord), foreclosures (both tenant and owner), rent arrears, rental subsidies, lease and habitability issues, housing search and searching for affordable housing, Section 8 HCV lotteries
    • Family law and domestic violence resources and referrals
    • Consumer debt and small claims matters
    • Employment and unemployment issues

    • Immigration Status and other information
    • Education-related concerns

  • We deliver individualized resource packages tailored to each visitor’s situation, including referrals to legal service providers, community-based organizations, court help centers and government agencies containing extensive housing, housing search, employment and disability related resources in our database
  • Constituents can reach us by phone, email, and text, increasing accessibility for everyone.
